A trump is to beat (someone or something) by saying or doing something better. In this section you will learn the six trumps to help make training stick.
Moving Trumps Sitting
If your trainee is just sitting during training, it is easy to get distracted and loose that engagement. We want to keep them engaged by having movement. By having movement in training, it can create less distraction.
Talking Trumps Listening
Constantly keep your trainee engaged. When you are just listening, your mind can start to wander. Quiz your trainee and get them to talk you through each step. As a trainer, it is important to be authentic and speak what is on your mind. By having an open and honest conversation, it can help your trainee open up to you and be more comfortable.
Images Trumps Words
One thing we learned is that there a different types on learners. Majority of people are visual learners versus auditory learners. Rather than just telling your trainee how to do things, show them by using a photo or video. There are multiple sidekicks located all around the restaurant. Pathway is also a great resource that includes videos and images on how to do things. It is easily accessible on your phone!
Writing Trumps Reading
Writing words down helps improve memory. Whenever you are teaching things like the Core 4 or Food Safety Five, encourage them to write it down. Writing by hand can increase comprehension, memory, and engagement.
Shorter Trumps Longer
A long, detailed explanation is not always the most efficient way to train someone. When things are too long, it can lead to zoning off and getting distracted. Short and sweet can be efficient. Try to keep things simple, but don't forget to always explain the "why" behind the "what".
Different Trumps Same
Not all training is the same! Each new hire will learn in a different style and adapt differently. When you are training, it is good to switch up how you train. If you train the same way all the time, you as a trainer can also get burnt out. Think of ways to switch it up and make training more exciting like creating a game or give your trainee a challenge.
